After Mommy Married
This is a great article for traditional marriages- everything said is really spot on- BUT, for us, we are very much nontraditional. Due to tragic circumstances we ended up meeting as single parents and THAT is what we fell in love with. We don't fuss over being parents, that was our attraction. We didn't lose each other in being parents. That's how we found each other. For us, the struggle is "What to do when the kids are gone!?" So much of who we are together is wrapped up in the parents we were separately.
3 years ago we were faced with a week of empty evenings without the kids because they were at their first week of VBS. We fought every single day. We absolutely didn't know what to do with 2 1/2 hours every day alone. Now, when the end of school year approaches, we secretly begin making plans for that one week we get when the kids are away and it's just us. It absolutely takes extra effort to get to know each other aside from being parents.
So much of this article is awesome for traditional couples seeking to "remember" who they once were. For us, we're thrilled to be discovering who we are together!
